Tips for Contacting Departments

Create a resume. 

You may not have a lot of work experience, but list the jobs that you have held and the skills you can bring to the table.  Keep it simple.  Use white paper and black ink.  Make sure there are no misspellings.

Define your goal. 

Along with earning a paycheck, gaining expertise in a field and building social contacts are valid reasons to work while attending school.  Think about which departments might help you attain your goal and approach that department even if they do not have a job posting.  If the department does not have a job opening, inquire as to when you might check back and ask to leave a resume on file.

Review the job postings. 

Check out the job postings above.  These postings change often.  You never know when the perfect job for you might appear. 

Consider staying in town.

Although not essential for obtaining a job, many employers are looking for student employees who will be available to work during vacation periods.

Be persistent. 

Do not give up seeking that on-campus position you would really like to have.  Prospective employers appreciate and remember eagerness and enthusiasm.
