The Student Employment Virtual Job Fair gives the opportunity to seek employment before returning to campus in the fall.  Many departments begin searching now for candidates to fill their job openings.  Many also accept e-mailed applications and/or resumes.  Some have applications available on their websites.

Students who are interested in specific departments or jobs are encouraged to
contact the departments directly.

TIPS FOR JOB SEARCH

Many departments will want to know what experience you bring with you.  Having  a resume is a great way to give them information about your work experience and skills.

  • Contact personally each department in which you are interested.

Employers are seeking enthusiastic employees who will be committed to working for them.  Personal contact will tell them you are motivated and interested in working.

  • Bring a list of references that employers can call.

This can be teachers, former employers, counselors etc. who can give them character and work references.

Employers will want to know what hours you will be available to work.

  • Avoid expectations of Fridays or weekends off.

Even though many departments are not open weekends, they may have special projects or events that require weekend work.  All departments are open Monday - Friday, so check with each to see what their expectations are.

This will give you a general idea of expectations from your employer here at CMU.
