COMPENSATION
PAYMENT OF WAGES AND FRINGE BENEFITS
State of Michigan dictates in Paragraph 408.472; Sec. 2
"(a) On or before the first day of each calendar month, the wages earned during the first 15 days of the preceding month.
(b) On or before the fifteenth day of each calendar month, the wages earned during the preceding calendar month from the sixteenth day through the last day..."
DETERMINATION OF WAGE RATE
The student wage structure used by the University is based
on experience and skill. A comparative evaluation is made of the duties and
minimum skill levels for each position
and Student Employment Services assigns the position to the appropriate pay level,
based on the description of each level. Each pay level
has a pay range within which all employees at that level are compensated.
A copy of the current wage schedule is included on the Menu.
Effective July 1, 2007
Departments will maintain the approval to set their own starting wage for student employees as long as they do not exceed the maximum wage for the pay level.
Rates set within the S3 level that are above $9.20/hour will require the approval of senior management and Student Employment.
WAGE INCREASES
Effective July 1, 2007
Departments may give a raise of any amount to a student employee as long as the resulting wage does not exceed the maximum of the pay level.
Any wage above $9.20 at the S3 pay level must have the approval of Student Employment Services and the department's senior officer.
Senior management for these processes is defined as "managers or directors who report directly to a Vice President or President and Senior Officers."
FICA WITHHOLDING
CMU student employees normally do not have Social Security
taxes (FICA) withheld from their pay. During the academic year and/or summer
semester, student
employees are exempt from FICA
withholding if they are enrolled half-time (six credit hours for undergraduate
students, five credit hours for graduate students).
High school students will have FICA withheld regardless of the number of hours they work.
